Black history. Deep conceptual understanding, and love have been left of lessons for children

What is

Black Math Genius

Black Math Genius is our suite of products, services, and courses geared toward elementary, middle, and high school students. Our children don’t have a learning gap. The adults have a belief gap – they don’t believe in our children the way that they believe in White children or Asian children doing mathematics. It’s EXPECTED that Asian children will be “good” at mathematics. Black people gave the world mathematics – our children stand on the shoulders of giants. If they are given the same exposure, they will be great at STEM fields as well, specifically mathematics. Black Math Genius provides that exposure, bringing out the math genius in each child.

Black Math Genius Plus Tutoring

Your child will be working alongside up to six other students grappling with and mastering grade level content that is standards based with a focus on reasoning and being mathematically literate and confident. Our sessions are virtual. Our tutors are stronger in math than most math teachers. Your child will develop a love and appreciation for mathematics that will transform their grades, test scores, and future career potential.

Meet Our Tutors

Sherelle Martin

My passion for kids and teaching can be traced back to my early childhood where I briefly lived in a women’s shelter on the south side of Chicago. My fondest memories include teaching toddlers in the shelter to walk, identify their colors and sing their alphabet. As the eldest of 3, I was naturally drawn to the little ones. My mom worked as a preschool teacher at the shelter, so she introduced me to reading and math at an early age. This early exposure combined with watching her pour into other children gave me immense joy.

Solomon Potrovsky

Hi everyone! My name is Solomon Podorovsky, I’m a 4th year student at McGill University in Montreal, and a double major in Economics and Math. Learning math has become one of the primary safe spaces for me in my life, and it has been a joy to pass down my discoveries onto the bright students of Black Math Genius! When taught with empathy, patience, and enthusiasm, learning math can feel akin to wandering through nature: observing the natural happenings of the world we might not have noticed before. My biggest goal as a tutor is to inspire a passion for math which many great educators have helped nurture in me, and has brought me to where I am today.

Arief Anbiya

My name is Arief Anbiya, and I am a mathematics teacher with six years of experience in education. In addition to my teaching background, I have also gained valuable exposure in the financial sector as an actuary and conducted research for water wave modelling using differential equations. My mathematical journey began in 2010 when I enrolled as an undergraduate student in Parahyangan Catholic University, Indonesia. Throughout my studies, I actively participated in university-level mathematical Olympiads and focused on subjects such as partial differential equations and actuarial science.

Whitney Smith

Hello everyone! My name is Whitney Smith and I am the Program Coordinator here at BMG.

I am beyond excited to be a part of this grand mission to help our children build a brighter future by ensuring that they are not left behind in the field of mathematics.

In this new age of technology, the math is a must! And I, like Dr. Assata Moore, truly and deeply believe in the genius of our children. It crushes me to know that there are many who have been conditioned, academically neglected, or mislead enough, to not see it in themselves.

As we build this BMG community, I am here to fight this fight with you, advocate alongside you, and to encourage your children as they grow. I am very pleased to have been chosen to embark upon this journey, and I look forward to eventually speaking with you all.

Anton Webb, MD

For over two decades, I've honed my skills as a mathematics tutor, driven by a passion for empowering students. Joining Black Math Genius (BMG) aligns perfectly with my mission to elevate math proficiency among students of color. Reflecting on my own academic journey, I realize the profound impact of representation in education, particularly in mathematics. At BMG, witnessing students' growth and enhanced understanding during our sessions brings me immense joy and fulfillment. My role extends beyond mere tutoring; it's about instilling confidence, fostering representation, and empowering students to excel in math and beyond

Renisha Jenkins

Greetings! My name is Renisha and I have been an Educator for almost 15 years. I enjoy seeing young minds grow and making connections to the world around them. I joined Black Math Genius because I believe in the mission that young black children have genius within them- it just has to be brought out and nurtured. I look forward to meeting your geniuses and continuing to bring A+ service to the families in the BMG community.

Deontae Hardnett

My name is Deontae Hardnett and I’m excited to be a part of Black Math Genius. It excites me to challenge our kids to be better and seeing them make progress in real time to the point where they walk me through their process.

Nasreen Farhana

I am Nasreen Farhana from India and currently relish my position as Math Tutor at BMG. The word 'MATH' fascinates me and with the art of teaching Math, I tend to derive another dimension. While I have extensive experience in teaching Math to students abroad, it gives me immense pleasure to teach Math at BMG. With an omniscient set of tutors around, I can confidently say that BMG is a place where one can impart subject knowledge while gaining knowledge simultaneously. We Tutors at BMG give our best shot to our students so that they groom themselves to be fine professionals in every wake of their lives.

Sharnice Martin

Hello my name is Sharnice Martin, I am the Lead tutor after tutoring with Black Math Genius for two years. I am enthused with my new role, it gives me the opportunity to help young black students become great mathematicians. In addition to making our community stronger, and increasing black wealth. I have a bachelor’s degree in Biology with a minor in Psychology. Throughout the years I’ve completed a lot of math courses to obtain my degree but I have always took an interest in math. With math being my favorite subject and my passion for black success the alignment with Black Math Genius was inevitable.

Jayel Taylor

Jayel is a 23-year-old Math enthusiast with a knack for engaging with children. He learned to play chess at the age of 2 and by 4 he was winning chess tournaments, even competing with adults. He scored a 35 on the ACT at the age of 15 and graduated from high school when he was 16 years old. Jayel began tutoring at the age of 14. He tutored everything from Arithmetic to Calculus. It was during this time that he developed a passion for working with children. He is patient and empathetic. He can make mathematical equations relatable in a way that makes sense to children.

Lamarco Bell

For the last 2 years, Larmarco has been focused on building his math tutoring and bookkeeping business. He recently worked at Betty Shabazz and Bond Elementary teaching 5th and 6th-grade math. He enjoys meditating, working out, and watching anime in his free time. Larmarco is passionate about helping students develop a solid conceptual understanding of mathematics to achieve their goals. He wants to help close the gap in the STEAM professional representation of Black communities by developing more mathematical thinkers.

What is Bootcamp

BMG Bootcamp is our self-paced, parent-led program that teaches your child and family Advanced Mathematical concepts, the true origins of Mathematics, and programming for the future. Did you know that the concept behind telling time – Modular Arithmetic – is the basis for cryptography? Cryptography is a high-level of Mathematics that can be taught to young students if they have a solid foundation. We’re still graduating high school students that don’t know their multiplication tables or how to convert between decimals and fractions. That’s criminal!

Lesson On Kinetic Numbers

How to use this program?

  • The Black Math Genius Bootcamp is best used as a family resource and enrichment program in which parents/guardians are partners in their children’s education.

  • The BMG Teacher Resource Guide can be used as a reference to which standards are used with each lesson.

  • The Black Math genius Bootcamp is not a replacement for a full mathematics curriculum and it’s not something new for teachers to do. If a teacher/parent is working on a particular standard, they can reference the module that corresponds to that standard as part of their lesson.
