Gilbert Scott-Heron (April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011) was an American soul and jazz poet, musician, and author, known primarily for his work as a spoken-word performer in the 1970s and 1980s. He had a come back in 2010 with the album “I’m New Here” that was described by one journalist as the “best of the next decade”.

As a starting place the classic “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” is a great and interesting piece and the most well known of his works. This piece of poetry mixed with music led to many calling Scott-Heron “The Godfather of Rap”.

Advisory, some of Scott-Heron’s lyrics can be adult in nature so please vet all works before sharing with children.

And for a bit of context here is Scott-Heron talking about the lyric meanings in an interview in the 90s.
